The national writer Carla Guelfenbein presents an exhibition entitled My stolen life in GALERIA ARTESPACIO, in which he presents a series of visual art works.
“A while ago I am committed to break my own limits, to cross thresholds, to freely travel from one medium to another without more expectations than to create an intimate dialogue between the image and the word. A dialogue that excites and moves, even if it is a single human being in the world. That only. Worship.
In his vital trajectory, Guelfenbein has been exploring different interests: he studied biology at the University of Essex, England, specializing in population genetics. Then he studied design at Central Sn Martin´s School of Art in London. She worked as a designer in advertising agencies and magazines.
In 2003 he published his first novel The reverse of the soul. Since then it has published nine novels that have reached the first places of the best -selling books in Chile. Translated into 17 languages, his work has been praised by critics and by important writers such as the Nobel Prize for Literature J. M Coetzee. In 2024 Forbes chose her as one of the 50 most creative people in Chile.
The origin of this exhibition dates back to 2019, When the artist traveled to Manhattan with a camera and a notebook, touring her streets in search of urban texts that could open new doors to her writing. From this experience, nineteen photographs of street phrases arose, some of which gave rise to their novel My stolen lifeand now part of this exhibition through eight unique pieces.
In the sample, these texts are combined with images collected over time. Inspired by the collage tradition, Guelfenbein assembles diverse elements to build new meanings. The works, composed of cotton and printed and embroidered silk layers, transform urban phrases into whispers and reflections on memory and identity.
The creative process of Guelfenbein is linked to principles collected in his genetic studies: chance and need. Just as in his novel the images captured in Manhattan inspire a story about the relationship between mother and daughter, in this exhibition they evolve in an evocative visual work.
Their combination of literature, science and design raises mysterious landscapes that become reflections of our inner landscapes and that invite us to reflect on our emotional universe and our existence.
The exhibition can be visited Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the aforementioned ArtsPacio Gallery (Alonso de Córdova 2600, Vitacura). It will be available to the public until Saturday, May 17.
