‘Scenes and landscapes in Valencian painting. XIX and XX ‘centuries. It is the title of the great exhibition dedicated to the Valencian Costumbrista painting that this week will open its doors at the Bancaja Foundation. The proposal will put in the eyes of the Valencians and how many want to bring a hundred pieces closer among which are works such as the Water Court of Valencia ‘, by Bernardo Ferrándiz Badenes and’ El Palleter declaring to Napoleon ‘, by Joaquín Sorolla Bastida.

Undoubtedly, two reference works in Valencian art that are not usually seen since they hang from the walls of the Palau de la Generalitat. Both of great canvas, belong to the collection of the Diputación, an institution possessing a wide and rich pictorial heritage of which for this sample, curated by Javier Pérez Rojas, a dozen works have left, as confirmed by the provincial institution.

The deputy of Culture, Paco Teruel, explained to the provinces the transcendence of the two works since these are works that are rarely shown. For its part, Pérez Rojas has pointed out that ‘Ferrándiz’s Court’ takes longer than ‘El Palleter’ without having been part of any exhibition, so that its presence can be more novel. In fact, the emblematic painting ‘The Crit of the Palleter’ was part of the exhibition ‘Sorolla. Origin ‘held in 2023 on the occasion of the year dedicated to Sorolla. Now, two emblematic pieces in the history of Valencian art «will be in front of the other in the room that will host the exhibition« which will be inaugurated this , May 9 and will remain open until September 14.

“The Crit of the Palleter” is a of great meaning in the brilliant trajectory of its author. It was the piece that opened the door to the scholarship of the Diputación that took him to Rome to form as a painter. It is therefore the canvas with which the great artist jumps to the stage and is also “a history painting” with which the author announces his inscription in “a very advanced modernity.” International and modern, I described at the the piece Esther Alba, professor of art history at the University of València. Also in ‘The Water Court’ of Ferrándiz a work that opens the doors to modernity in painting is discovered.

Pérez Rojas has emphasized that not only the great sorolla and ferrindiz oils can contribute great attractions in the eyes of the spectators. He pointed out that the proposal includes “a Valencian Sorolla scene from a private collection that had not come to Valencia”, in addition to other creations of the Valencian universal and one of “Fillol that has never been seen.” Without a doubt, a great bet of attractions for lovers of the best in Valencian painting in Entresiglos.

The loan of the Diputación is of great importance for the historiographic review that gives’ scenes and landscapes in Valencian painting. XIX and XX ‘centuries by the hand of more than 50 Valencian artists who between 1870 and 1930 renewed the academic canons of the period in the pictorial representation of customary scenes and landscapes.

The Diputación, in addition to ‘The Court of the Waters of Valencia’ by Bernardo Ferrándiz Badenes and ‘El Palleter declaring the war to Napoleon’ by Joaquín Sorolla Bastida, has ceded ‘a fisherman’ by Emilio Ferrero Gómez; ‘El Herrero’ by Balbino Giner; ‘Pescador’ and ‘ number’ by Enrique Navas Escuriet; ‘Las Lagarteranas’ by Amadeo Roca Gisbert; ‘Hortelanos’ by Emilio Ros Benet and ‘Viatic in the garden’ by José Ros Ferrandis.

«The heritage of the Diputación allows us to show the Valencians and the Valencian scenes and landscapes of our past, embodied in wonderful works by -class painters. Our history can be witnessed hand through pictures that the Bancaja Foundation has selected and ordered to offer a useful criteria today.
