The consumption of dystopian fictions also grows, such as’ Hunger games’ or ‘1984’ ‘
Barcelona, 5 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The CEO of Penguin Random House Editorial group, Núria Cabutí, explained that the current geopolitical situation is causing the increase in the consumption of dystopian fictions and self -help books and resilience.
He said this Monday in the session ‘How to manage in an environment of geopolitical disruption?
“We are living a modification in the consumption of books, with an increase in demand for political content, such as populisms or great authors of political essays, dystopian fictions in a world that is being destroyed or books of self -help and resilience,” said Cabutí.
On these genres, the saga of ‘The Hunger Games’, the dystopic novels of Suzanne Collins, which “razes among young audiences”, or the political novel of dystopian fiction ‘1984’, written by George Orwell.
Penguin Random House Editorial Group registered in 2024 sales of 410 million euros, which represents a growth of about 14% compared to the previous year, and last March opened a new distribution center in Cerdanyola del Vallès (Barcelona).
The geopolitical situation
Cabutí stressed that the group’s activity depends, in part, on the geopolitical reality, and in this sense he has assured that, during the first mandate of Donald Trump and in the current one, in the United States “books are being prohibited.”
“During his first term, in Florida, 8,000 books were banned in schools and libraries of authors such as Gabriel García Márquez, Isabel Allende or Federico García Lorca,” he detailed.
Given this type of geopolitical contexts, as has happened in countries such as Venezuela or Argentina, which Cabutí qualifies as “markets with a lot of geopolitical tension and hyperinflation”, Penguin Random House Editorial Group creates crisis committees to assess how to respond.
