The Vice -Rectorate of Culture and UMA Editorial analyze together with artists and commissioners The crucial role of these publications
The Vice -Rectorate of Culture of the university of Malaga with UMA Editorial have organized, within the framework of the 54th Malaga Book Fair, the round Table Art in catalogswhere this collection has been known in depth, whose objective is “the dissemination, promotion and projection of visual artistic creation that has a place in the academic institution through its exhibitions.”
The debate has addressed the experiences on the creation, research and design of these books both from the point of view of the artists involved and that of their commissioners and curators. “Catalogs are not only a complement to the exhibition, but they are a tool for creation and memory, a place of dialogue between the images and texts where art survives in time,” said Rosario Gutiérrez Pérez, Vice Chancellor for Culture of the UMA, who has also underlined the relevance of these books beyond their documentary component, considering them “an instrument for creation, for thought, for thought and for memory.” On the same line, Juan Carlos Pérez García, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Culture of the UMA has been manifested: “There are people who still ask us why we edit exhibition catalogs and I would give them three reasons: first, it is what remains and documented the exhibition once it is disassemble And as such we have to publish books because we investigate. ”
In this round table, turned into a meeting and reflection space on the crucial role that catalogs play in innovation, creation and research in the university field, three of the last books have been announced: Not eternalby Elo Vega, a visual essay around the representation of the female body as a territory in which obsessions, dreams, fantasies and fears are embodied and disputed; Of the rose and the thornsby Ángeles Soli, a multidisciplinary proposal that, through drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, photographic collage, pictorial embroidery, video, installation, object and action, materializes a discourse to which it incorporates biological, historical, sociological, linguistic and philosophical concepts; and Redwardawhich collects the end of the end of degree 2022-23 of 14 graduates of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Malaga.
These publications offer a theoretical foundation and an integral vision of artists’ work, being an innovative space in which the creative process is presented in a diversity of formats, styles and approaches that make each catalog a unique work, contributing both to the reflection on art and its preservation for future generations. “The catalog, from the point of view of a student, is important not only as a registration, but as an object of investigation. In the case of Redwardabeing a collective exhibition, it is very important for us as a shuttle and to show our final works to other people to make us known, ”said Sara Marín, an artist and graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the UMA.
The collection of exhibition catalogs is a consequence of the commitment that the University of Malaga, through its vice -rector of culture, develops with respect to the visual arts offering samples in different university spaces, both in faculties and in the rooms of the rector. Through these publications, it also reaffirms their commitment to the promotion of art and the support of the current student and graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts, providing them with a platform to publicize their works and deepen the speech that accompanies them.
