In accordance with the official’s statements, The two dejected men would not only have participated in the attack in Salgar, they would also be linked to other serious crimes in southwest Antioquia. These include selective homicides, extortion and criminal income control. In addition, they are attributed participation in the murder of a citizen in the municipality of Andes, which occurred in April. Rendón stressed that criminals tried to attack the police during the operation, which resulted in the confrontation that culminated in their death.
Subintendent Nelson Humberto Cárdenas Carmona, 34, died in the attack of April 16, when an explosive load was activated as a patrol motorized in Salgar. This attack, which also left another uniformed, was one of the first crimes committed in the development of the “gun plan”, a strategy of the Gulf clan that has already claimed the lives of at least 10 police officers and soldiers in Antioquia, according to the government.

Governor Rendón, through his social networks, said that these results are the result of joint intelligence, criminal investigation and high -level operations by the National Police. “These are the results of the public force when they work with all the capabilities,” said the president, who has been critical of the total peace policy promoted by Gustavo Petro’s government.
The operation was carried out within the boundaries between the southwest of Antioquia and the department of Risaralda, an area where the Gulf clan maintains a strong presence. According to the authorities, this criminal organization has intensified its attacks against the public force in recent weeks, which has led to an increase in authorities’ actions to weaken their structures.
In addition to the attack in Salgar, the recent escalation of violence includes other serious incidents in Antioquia, such as the murder of the Subintendent Deimer Díaz in Carepa and an explosive attack in San Pedro de los Milagros. In total, there have been more than 27 attacks against police and military in the department since mid -April, which has generated concern among local and national authorities.

The governor also pointed out that “Barranquilla” and “Mayinbú” were responsible for coordinating criminal activities in the region, including illegal income control and selective homicide execution. These actions are part of the strategy of the criminal organization to maintain its influence on southwest Antioquia, a strategic area for drug trafficking and other illicit activities.
The National Police and the Government of Antioquia reiterated their commitment to continue with the operations to dismantle the structures of the Gulf clan in the region. Authorities said that the use of intelligence and collaboration between different security entities have been key to achieving significant advances in this fight.
While the authorities intensify their efforts to combat this wave of violence, both civil and uniformed continue to face the consequences of the gun plan that affects this region of the country.
