Chihuahua, chih. This Tuesday will be resolved at the Federal Criminal justice Center located in the capital of Chihuahua a request for conditioned freedom to favor the former PAN Chínipas mayor, Hugo Amed Schultz, who was sentenced to eight years in prison for collaborating in the murder of journalist Miroslava Breach.
Eight years after the crime, only Schultz and Juan Carlos Moreno, “El Larry”, one of the material authors, have received a sentence, although at least five people were involved. Hugo Schultz was found guilty of facilitating the murder, since he provided information to the alleged intellectual author, Crispín N, and the material authors Moreno, Jaciel N and Ramón N.
Schultz’s possible release would represent a serious setback for justice, warned the civic proposed organization, which accompanies the relatives of the correspondent of the day he documented and denounced corruption and narcopolitics in Chihuahua, and was killed on March 23, 2017, after he received threats from organized crime and political actors.
In December last year, Schultz accumulated four years of detention, half of the time of his sentence, so he can access the probation benefit. The former munícipe was arrested in December 2020 and underwent an abbreviated trial in June 2021.
Given the possibility that the mayor of Chínipas will recover his freedom, Civic Proposal recalled that he was the first political actor convicted of the murder of a journalist in Mexico.
The organization assured that there is a media campaign that seeks to sow doubts about the role of Schultz in the murder of the reporter, possibly to foster her conditioned freedom.
He stressed that Schultz’s criminal responsibility will not be a matter of discussion at the hearing, and there is no doubt about his criminal responsibility, since he weighs a final sentence resulting from his own admission of responsibility. The penalty for homicide in Chihuahua is ten to 25 years, and the current eight -year sentence was a reduced sentence.
Civic proposal requested that the Court duly value the importance of the murder of Miroslava Breach – perpetrated in one of the most lethal countries for the press – and that a decision that guarantees justice is adopted, that saves interest as well as the safety of indirect victims
