Washington (EFE) .- The president of the United States, Donald Trump, said Monday that he is looking for ways to help US cars manufacturers because they need more time to move their production from countries such as Mexico or Canada.
“I am looking for something to help some of the car companies, which are changing to parts that were made in Canada, Mexico and other places, and need a little time, because they are going to do them here,” said the president.
Trump later insisted that companies such as General Motors (GM), Ford or Stellantis need more time to make that change.
On April 3, the US government implemented 25 % tariffs on imported vehicles. In addition, it has imposed the same levies to cars produced in Mexico and Canada that are not included in the T-MEC treaty.
Trump also showed his intention to tax with 25 % the importation of parts produced in Mexico and Canada, which would especially affect US manufacturers.
The automotive sector has warned that tariffs to T-MEC partners can cause serious production problems, rise in car prices and job destruction.
After Trump’s statement, the actions of US manufacturers rose in stock markets up to 4 %.
