Recently, the president of the United States, Donald Trumpauthorized the Department of Commerce and the Commerce Representative to Implement a 100% tariff to any film that reaches the country and is produced abroad.
According to the republican president, “The American film industry is dying quickly”so he presented the measure with the objective of supporting the cinema made in its territory. “We want movies made in the United States again!” He said.
Trump stressed that in “other countries offer all kinds of incentives to remove filmmakers from the country and US studies.”
The announced measure began to generate all kinds of reactions between the industry and some actors, producers and filmmakers began to comment on. That was the case of the Mexican Eugenio Derbezwho said he does not believe that the mandate applies such tariff.
During an interview with the news of Ciro Gómez Leyva on Radio Formula, Derbez indicated that the US government should not put obstacles but to offer incentives to roll in its country.
In addition, he added that he understands Donald Trump’s anguish in front of the national industry, but it is not the way to follow.
“It is a really complex issue, I understand Trump’s concern, many productions have left the United States in recent years, simply because it is cheaper to film in other countries because they offer generous incentives”said.
He continued saying that in some areas of the United States such as Los Angeles, in Hollywood, no one films because it is usually too expensive: “It is filmed in New Orleans or Atlanta, in New Mexico and you can see the impact of fiscal credits, communities benefit economically. I understand that cause discomfort, but the solution is not punish by putting tariffs, but putting tax incentives”.
Finally, the actor of “No returns are accepted” considered that Trump’s announcement would only stay at that.
“I do not believe it will happen, that the industry allows it, because if they would affect, they would have to raise the costs of foreign films in the United States, they would be double or triple at the box office for the simple fact of being foreigners.”he concluded.
