The Geographer Marcelo Lagos visited the MA’s morning to address the seismic swarm that recalls to the north of the country, only days of the earthquake that occurred in Magallanes.
“The invitation of when the soil moves is to reflect on how we are living with the seismic threat, if everything is thought and coordinated, because an earthquake can find us in any context or circumstances”said the expert.
Accessed about a possible movement in the central area of the country, the academic recalled that “The Central Coast of Chile is where the main ports of this country are concentrated, therefore they are strategic. Before the important seismic threat and the consequent tsunamis, the central area of Chile has critical exposed elements that could make our country play a little”.
It was in this context that Lagos pointed to the long time that it elapsed since the last “great earthquake” in the vicinity of Santiago.
“We are talking about almost three centuries. On July 8, 1730 it is the known event that generates a tsunami that was registered by Japan and that flooded the entire plan. It is estimated that it was between Pichilemu and Los Vilos.”he detailed.
Finally, about energy concentration, he indicated that “The Nazca plate is constantly moleting with the South American plaque. In 2010, the Nazca plate manages to move below the South American, from Pichilemu to the south. Then the central area is constantly tension”.
What magnitude could you reach?
“That doesn’t mean ‘toing’ (or that will happen now)but in some minute we have to give that step that has not been given and that is revealed by the seismic culture of the central area ”he complemented.
Finally, the geographer talked about the magnitude that could reach an upcoming mega-terremoto: “It can be estimated, considering the width, the length and time elapsed. In the worst scenario, the magnitudes can be close to 9 and that is very large, but that is the worst scenario and no one can say that it will be like this.”.
