In an interview with DNA today, the European Union ambassador to Chile, Claudia Gintersdorfer, He reaffirmed Europe’s confidence in the country as a strategic partner, highlighting the entry into force of the modernized trade agreement between both parties.
As explained, this pact raises the 99.6% of Chilean export tariffs and becomes a key tool against the current instability of global trade.
“We are talking about a modernization of an agreement that has brought many benefits to both parties. In these 20 years of the previous agreement, the bilateral trade has risen in 160% (…) we reached almost 100% of tariff extension, that is, 99.6% of Chilean exports can enter the European market with zero tariff”, Said the diplomat.

In addition, he stressed that the agreement is not limited to the commercial, but also integrates clauses of gender, sustainability and political cooperation. “Permissology”
Consulted by the recent suspension of Chinese investments in Chile and the obstacles facing foreign investment in the country, through the so -called “permissology”, ambassador Gborersdorfer did not hesitate to identify permits as a transversal difficulty.
“It is a lock for any company, Chilean, European or China. There is margin to simplify without lowering environmental or labor standards, ”he emphasized, referring to excess procedures and lack of alignment between procedures.
The ambassador also highlighted the strong European presence in renewable energy and in the development of green hydrogen, while calling to protect astronomical research before the eventual installation of industrial projects near the Paranal Observatory.
“There is no compatibility between worldwide telescopes and a large industrial plant just next to it. EWe are the conviction that Chile will do what is necessary to respect international agreements”He said.
Finally, in the context of European day, Gintersdorfer valued the scientific and educational programs open to Chile, such as Erasmus and horizon Europe, and urged greater participation. “Science only wins if we all collaborate,” he said, closing with a reflection on the importance of defending democratic values against the progress of extremist speeches in the world.
