The movement caused Tsunami alerts on the coast of Magellan and the evacuation of people. In this context, a description of what happened next to the video of the earthquake effects was viral.
The clip is 44 seconds and comes from Tiktok; In it, it is observed how constructions are shaken by the earthquake. The movement increases in intensity with the passing of the latter and ends up knocking down some of the constructions in the place. The video reads “Last hour: powerful 7.8 earthquake shakes the Cayman Islands.”
The post accumulates more than one million visualizations in X since its publication. And although the clip is explicitly indicated that it would correspond to an event that occurred on February 25, users have written messages in support of the Chilean population.
However, The video is not associated with either of the two facts. Actually, it is a clip cut published in 2024, corresponding to the earthquake that occurred on January 1 in Japan.
This video is not related to the earthquake in Chile or the Cayman Islands
We perform a reverse search on Google Lens to determine the origin of the viral clip. Although some posts in networks datan of this year – and relate the clip to the earthquake in the Caribbean -, the search led us to a video published on YouTube in 2024.
On February 5 of last year, the 11alive channel shared the “video of a dashcam which shows a strong earthquake and tsunami in Japan in January. ”In the description, they attribute the video to NBC News/Social Welfare Corporation Chojukai.
when checking the recording, it is possible to establish that the viral video was extracted from this clip. The viral publication corresponds to a “cut” of the background, as shown below:
Although the video was released in February, in the description they explain that it corresponds to the earthquake that occurred on January 1, 2024. In fact, that date appears on the screen, next to the recording time: 4:10 pm. Below are some coordinates and, when entering Google Maps, it is possible to confirm that the video was taken in Japan, specifically in the city of Suzu, Prefecture of Ishikawa.
Next, you can review a comparison between the original clip and a view of the place in July 2018. This is the most recent second, since the first was taken after the 2024 earthquake:
The reverse search also led us to two verification items made in January of this year by Factly and Cyber Peace. In these notes, they explain that Japan’s video was wrongly associated with the earthquake in Tibet, on January 7.
In addition, it should be noted that the facts shown in the video could not have occurred in Chile. This is because, according to official information, there was no damage to critical infrastructure nor were affected people.
