Minor Hotels Europe & Americas, a global operator with presence in 58 countries and a portfolio of 560 hotels and resorts, obtained the Green Key certification for nine of its hotels in Colombia, as part of its commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible tourism. The distinction was achieved within the framework of World Day of the Earth, as part of the company’s “Up for Planet” Pilar.

Green Key is an international certification that recognizes tourist establishments that comply with rigorous standards of sustainability and environmental responsibility. This year, the certification was granted to the NH Collection Royal Teleport, NH Collection WTC, NH Collection Hacienda Royal, NH Collection Royal Andean, NH Collection Terra 100, NH Collection Royal Medellín, NH Pavillon Royal, NH Urban 26 and Advance Royal Zone T Bogotá zone t Bogotá.
The establishments implemented a set of measures in key areas such as efficient water use, energy management, waste treatment, responsible use of chemicals and emission reduction.
Regarding water management, The hotels installed saving mechanisms in showers and taps inside the rooms. They also adopted a towel reuse plan, a voluntary program called Green Stay, which allows guests to decline the arrangement of their rooms for two consecutive days, and carried out savings campaigns aimed at employees.

In relation to energy, more than 90% of luminaires in each of the certified hotels are LED technology. Lighting systems that are activated only with the room key were also implemented, and low consumption appliances were used, such as minibar refrigerators and lavalozas. These actions are complemented with awareness campaigns on energy saving for staff.
The waste management strategy included separation at the source, the use of differentiated colored bags according to the type of residue, and a rate of use of more than 70% of the waste generated. The composting of organic waste, the recycling of plastic tapas to support foundations, and the conversion of cooking oil used in biodiesel.
Regarding the use of chemicals, more than 80% of cleaning and disinfection products used by hotels have biodegradability certifications. With regard to emissions, completely free of smoke rooms were guaranteed, co -carbon measurements and carbon footprint were made, and ecological refrigerants were used in cooling and air conditioning equipment.
Obtaining this environmental certification responds to a set of criteria that include the minimization of the impact on climate change, the improvement in the efficiency of natural resources and the development of more sustainable services in the hotel sector.
