“The letter of Álvaro Leyva only degrades the political debate and is an attack on legitimacy and presidential investiture,” he said in a statement in which he also accused the former chancellor of indirectly promoting a “soft blow” against the Petro government.
“Questionable that the dignity of a former minister is dragged to this denigrating behavior, the worst, each word is a tacit call to the announced soft blow by the heirs of the most rancid national oligarchy. Without arguments, or evidence, with pure words and a “prose” bombastic attacks the dignity of the President of the Republic and with it, of the Unity of the Nation. The behavior of former Minister Leyva should not have a place in a modern democracy (sic), ”the congresswoman wrote.
For its part, the presidential candidate Vicky Dávila did not hesitate to answer the message and express their criticism both to the president and those who defend it.
In response to Pizarro, he pointed out that “what hurts the legitimacy of the government is that the pilot is not in his bockals to handle this plane called Colombia with more than 50 million passengers who need to reach a safe destination.”
Dávila also warned that the current government would be taking the country to an unprecedented crisis.
“That is why we live in turbulence in turbulence and emergency emergency. We always knew. Now, a former minister of this government confirms it. They take us to a sinister. We will not allow it. Stop being justifying the unjustifiable”The journalist also continued.
The crossing of messages occurs just after former chancellor Álvaro Leyva Durán unleashed a strong controversy by directing the second open letter to President Gustavo Petro, in which he raised serious concerns about the president’s ability to direct the country.
In the letter, sent on May 5, Leyva said that Petro faces a “sick condition”, which attributes to the alleged consumption of documented erratic substances and behaviors in several episodes.
The letter refers to specific incidents that, according to Leyva, reflect a worrying pattern of presidential behavior. Among these, he mentioned the unexpected cancellation of activities, unjustified absences and attitudes that generated diplomatic tensions.
For example, in an official visit to Paris, he assured that the president was inubicable at crucial moments, an event that describes as “the repetition of a behavior that highlighted the seriousness of his condition.” As written by Leyva, these incidents “were confirmed with countless testimonies.”
Another outstanding episode was the cancellation of the presidential agenda in the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, in January 2023, where Petro delegated to Leyva a meeting with the former British Minister Tony Blair without prior notice.
“The central themes were the ‘public administration strategies and democracy in times of crisis’. It was I who felt in crisis,” Leyva said in his letter.
According to the letter, the most recent case happened during Petro’s visit to China in October 2023, where he would have chosen to remain completely completely during an official banquet with President Xi Jinping, leaving the former chancellor the task of holding the diplomatic conversation for more than two hours. Leyva said that “he kept absolute silence all the time. He ignored him. As if he was not present.”
In the same letter, Leyva denounced public statements of the president who qualifies offensive and divisive to different social and political sectors. He also mentioned accusations in which Petro called Congressmen and critics of “oligarchs”, “traitors” or “slaves.” For Leyva, these facts show a lack of “auctoritas”, which describes as the moral authority and respect that a head of state must maintain.
Among the proposals raised in the letter, Leyva invited the president to consider his resignation, arguing that his personal health and his behaviors affect the institutional stability of the country.
He also proposed a “great national agreement” that allows an orderly transition and guarantees democratic stability.
“The procedures for the withdrawal of the position of a president are there. The current circumstances demand an outcome of guarantees and without exclusions.”
