The Populista Reforma party, led by Nigel Farage, has taken from the Labor the only seat that was at stake in the partial elections held this Thursday in the United Kingdom, which is a defeat to the British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, in which it has been the first date at the polls of this type since it reached number 10 of Downing Street.
The reform candidate for the constituency of Runcorn and Helsby, Sarah Pochin, has been declared a winner for only six votes. In his acceptance speech, he assured that political formation has “made history” and that his victory “will inspire the rest of the country”, while he has paid tribute to the “great leader” of the party, who inspired him to “defend this country.”
Pochin has achieved 12,645 votes, while the Labor candidate, Karen Shore, has made 12,639 support. Very behind there have been the candidates of the Conservative Party, Sean Houlston, with 2,341 votes; of the Greens, Chris Coperman, with 2,314; and of the liberals, Paul Duffy, with 942.
However, with respect to the results of 2024, Reforma has improved its result by 20.6 percent, while the Labor have fallen by 14.2 and the conservatives an 8.8.
In this way, the close victory of Pochin-more adjusted in a partial election since 1945-has allowed the Farage party to conquer a district that the Labor Party won with a majority less than twelve months ago, as reported by the British television network Sky News.
With these results, Farage has assured that Reforma is “now the opposition party to the Labor in the United Kingdom, and the conservatives are a space expense.” Thus, he has attributed the change to the “loss of confidence” in the social democrats and the feeling that the ruling party does not defend “patriotic” values.
These elections were convened after the previous deputy, Mike Amesbury (2017-2025), resigned in March, months after being convicted of hitting a voter in October 2024 in the town of Frodsham. The vote in Runclorn and Helsby has become the first electoral test for Starmer as head of government.
Elections in mayors and advice
In addition to the aforementioned partial election, six mayors are being elected throughout the country, of which three of them will be in the hands of the Labor, although the North Tyneside City Council has preserved for less than 500 votes of difference.
He has also won Reforma to maintain the mayors of Doncaster and West of England. However, the populist candidate has made Greater Lincolnshire by achieving 42 percent of the votes.
The other two in dispute are Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, and Hull and East Yorkshire. However, more than 1,600 councilors are also chosen in the United Kingdom, but for now there are only partial results, since the scrutiny continues.
