The Spanish family and Community Medicine Society (SEMFYC) has requested improvements in the professional conditions of the specialty to avoid vacancies in the process of choice of places of MIR 2025which began on May 5. The SEMFYC highlights the need for a joint commitment between administrations, medical organizations and teachers to promote family and community medicine and promote vocations in this area.
The SEMFYC proposes the inclusion of a subject of Family and Community Medicine of at least 6 ECTS credits In the agendas of medical faculties, as well as the realization of clinical practices in primary care consultations. Besides, advocates providing the specialty of resources for the development of research projects in primary care and for promoting profiles for tutoring and promoting vocations of tutor among specialists.
Society reaffirms its commitment to the clinical excellence of primary care, the teaching of the specialty and the National Health System. It emphasizes that primary care solves up to 90% of the population’s health needs, addressing all kinds of pathologies and according to various citizen groups.
In the 2025 call, 2,508 family and community medicine places have been offered. Most autonomous communities have maintained the number of places compared to the previous year, with some exceptions such as Castilla-La Mancha, which has summoned 11 more places, Andalusia with 4 additional and the Valencian Community with 1 more. On the other hand, Catalonia has reduced the number of places by four.
SEMFYC considers that these next weeks are crucial for Spanish health, since they represent an opportunity to highlight the importance of family and community medicine as a fundamental pillar of the National Health System.
