Animal Welfare Specialists launch Manual to promote a society that includes pets

The link between humans and animals not only enriches our lives, but also positively impacts the health and well -being of the whole society. Without going any further, in Chile, it is estimated that there are around 12 million dogs and cats living with humans in their homes. And almost all the tutors (99.7%) consider their pet as part of their , according to the National Pets Survey.

This manual proposes a guide to develop public policies that foster positive relationships with pets, and at the same sensitize private institutions about the actions they can perform to improve the well -being of people and their pets. Among the proposed measures is:

Delete barriers for pet tenure. For this, it is proposed to take into company animals thinking about housing, travel and access to public spaces, in order to guarantee integration of pets into everyday life.

Support for veterinary services. The guide proposes to strengthen support for veterinarians, improve access to pet health care and promote innovation in veterinary medicine.

Promote “one health” initiatives. This means recognizing that people’s health is intimately connected to that of animals and the environment. On this basis, it is proposed to establish policies that consider pets in public health strategies, as well as in the preparation plans against catastrophes.

This manual reviews the initiatives that have been successful in different countries, in order to demonstrate the advantages of facilitating coexistence between humans and animals, considering the difficulties that may arise along the way. In its pages, this guide offers viable solutions to different challenges, aimed at improving the well -being of both pets and their tutors.

“Both in Chile and in the , the design of policies that favor coexistence with pets can both the life of animals and those who take care of them for better,” added Mariana Costau.

However, the “Human-Animal bond manual” promotes collaboration between institutions to ensure a future in which the human-animal bond is recognized as a transforming element for animal health and well-being, contributing to form more friendly societies with animals.
