The number one in the process of awarding MIR training, which began yesterday, chose the specialty of cardiovascular surgery at the General Hospital of Valencia. The next four opted for dermatology, the degree that, one more year, is presented again as the most coveted by the new doctors along with that of plastic and repair surgery. Yesterday, the first 700 positions of the existing 9,007 for the formation of specialist doctors, and the preferences follow the patterns of the previous calls: family and community medicine are the most deficit in the system, which offers more positions (2.508, 16 more than in the previous year) and, also, the least desired. Of the 217 vacancies recorded last year, 200 corresponded to family medicine.
All autonomies maintain the same number of family medicine places as last year, except Castilla-La Mancha, Andalusia and Community Valencian, which offer 11, 4 and 1 more position, respectively. Catalonia is the only one that reduces places in this degree, from the 371 of the previous call to the current 367. Last year there were 71 vacancies (19%), despite the incentive program of up to 10,000 euros per year for primary care residents, a circumstance that took both professionals and the department of Salut by surprise.
Family medicine suffer rejection again: only four requests in the first 350 assignments
Although most of the new members in Barcelona are foreigners and that outside the metropolitan area there are extraordinary difficulties in covering the positions of head doctors, Salut’s thesis is that the number of existing professionals is adequate; The problem is the organization and distribution. In fact, Catalunya (23.4%), Valencia (22.7%) and the Canary Islands (25.2%) are the communities with the highest percentage of head doctors under 60 years, that is, further from retirement. On the other hand, Castilla y León (43.8%of 60 years or more), Galicia (42.9%) and Asturias (41.5%) “face a significant challenge in terms of personnel renewal and healthcare continuity”, according to the Spanish Society of Family and Community Medicine (SEMFYC), which claims the institutions “to promote the specialty and the emergence of vocations”. Yesterday, in the first assignments (350 seats) only four doctors (the first, the order number 24) opted for the family, bad news for primary care.
Detachment for this specialty contrasts with the claims for dermatology, chosen by half of the top 10 and that exhausted the 131 places available in an accelerated way, coinciding with order number 542, when last year it was in 648. Plastic, aesthetic and repair surgery is close to exhausting the 55 places available on the first day. Another of the most demanded degrees, that of cardiology, has already covered half of the 203 formative vacancies.
There are still no requests for the specialties of preventive medicine (129 places), Occupational Medicine (120), nor for various disciplines focused on laboratories such as clinical analysis, microbiology or clinical biochemistry. The award of the remaining 8,307 places will continue today and last until May 28.
