Cardiorespiratory strikes, mostly generated by cardiovascular diseases, are one of the first mortality diagnoses in Colombia, as shown by the figures of the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE) which indicate that, for the first quarter of 2024, 16.8 % of the deaths correspond to ischemic diseases of the heart.

In that sense, international statistics indicate that cardiac resuscitation (known as CPR) improves the probabilities of survival in the incidents of heart attacks by up to 70 % when it is done immediately. In fact, heart ailments represent supreme mortality worldwide with more than 17 million lives per year and it is projected that the number can increase to 23 million by 2030, according to the World Health Organization.
The problem of the attention of these episodes is that they are presented in scenarios such as homes, workplaces and public places and not in medical or health centers. Therefore, it is important that common people learn the RCP techniques and the use of an automatic external defibrillator, which is a medical device designed to analyze the heart rate.
Health Studies point out that since cardiorespiratory arrest begins, the probabilities of survival are reduced by 10 % per minute if proper resuscitation interventions are not carried out. Therefore, CPR preparation courses are decisive to increase the reaction skill of citizens and health specialists in the face of such an emergency.
In infant children, on the other hand, the main cause of cardiac arrest does not come from the heart, but is related to respiratory problems, according to the American Heart Association (AHA). The above may be related to factors such as airways, drowning or infections.
However, between 15 % and 20 % of children, especially those who are over 12 years old, may experience heart rhythms that need immediate defibrillation, such as ventricular fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia. This highlights the importance of more people learning to perform CPR, as a quick response can make a difference between life and death.
