In the history of cinema, few scenes are as famous and iconic as the duel between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader in the movie “The Empire counterataca” (1980). In this sequence, Vader cuts his hand to Luke with a quick blow of his red light saber, before making him a shocking revelation, marking a crucial moment in the trilogy of Star Wars.
This scene, filmed in a set specially built in Elstree studies, in England, is a lesson of visual and emotional narrative, in addition to being a key event in the dramatic Star Wars saga.
Set in the city of the clouds, in Bespin, Darth Vader, after holding a trap to go to the place, not only defeat and mutilate the young Luke Skywalker, but also reveals that he is his father and, as the devil did with Jesus in the desert, he tempts him promising him glory and power.
He asks him to join him and go to the dark side of force, prophesying that he can destroy the emperor, so that both can govern the galaxy as a father and son. Luke refuses and precipitates the void, although he is then rescued by Princess Leia, Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian in the millenary Falcon.
This dramatic event is a turning point in the history of Star Wars because, although it is victorious in the confrontation, Darth Vader begins to experience an internal conflict that will make him fight with the dark side of force in the future.
The importance of duel with the light swords is enhanced by the powerful soundtrack of John Williams, which adds a sense of danger, imminence and destiny. Actor Mark Hamill, playing Luke, shows nobility, despair and determination, capturing both the physical and emotional struggle of his character, while David Prowse, in the role of Darth Vader, uses his imposing physical presence to evoke the sensation of an inevitable destiny, all enhanced by the intimidating and characteristic voice of the Lord Sith by actor James Earl Jones.
This sequence becomes even more memorable due to the shocking revelation of Luke’s lineage, which forever changes the public’s perspective on the character and plot. According to George Lucas, the creator of the saga, the only three people who knew this unforeseen turn in the script of “The Empire Contraataca” were himself, actor Mark Hamill and director Irvin Kershner.
Not even the actor David Prowse was aware that Darth Vader was Luke’s father, because the draft of the script that had happened to him said that Vader made Luke another revelation: that Obi Wan Kenobi had killed his parent.
After bambalins, the sequence required a complex choreography and special effects, including the use of rotoscopy to create the distinctive brightness of light sabers. The visual effects team, led by Industrial Light & Magic, masterfully created these elements to resist the demanding scrutiny look of an increasingly aware audience of technology.
According to film critics, the lasting impact of the scene of the duel with the lightsabers in the city of the clouds, a scene that is already part of the history of the seventh art, resides in its perfect balance between narrative, interpretation and technical mastery, making it a more memorable and significant moment of the Star Wars saga, demonstrating the power of cinema to captivate and evoke deep emotions.
