Genetic experimentation has always been in the center of the Jurassic saga, and in the more than 30 years that have passed since the premiere of ‘Jurassic Park’, dinosaurs have continued to evolve, discovering with each film new species and mutations, to each more terrifying.
‘Jurassic World: The Renacer’, the new delivery in cinemas of the saga started by Steven Spielberg in the 90s, this path will continue. But tranquility, this time it will not be with giant lobsters, but with new dinosaurs result of impossible genetic hybrids that add to the growing catalog of fantastic property of property.
In the promotional advances of the film, directed by Gareth Edwards, we have already had brief glances to these new “monsters”, including the giant and fearsome D-Rex, but thanks to the director we get new details to get a clearer idea of what awaits us. In a new interview with Empire Magazine, Edwards describes the D-Rex, whose complete scientific name is Distortus Rex, “As if the T-Rex had been designed by HR Giger and then he had sex with a rancor.”.
These references will be very familiar to science fiction fans. HR Giger was an Swiss artist and sculptor known for his work in the cinema, Specifically to create, together with Carlo Rambaldi, the Xenomorph of ‘Alien, the eighth passenger’. On the other hand, the Rancor are huge creatures, with a monstrous appearance often aggressive, of the ‘Star Wars’ saga, originating from the planet Dathomir, where they were used as fighters and beasts of mounted.
The D-Rex is totally different from what we have seen so far in the saga. It has a physical constitution that moves away from the known, six extremities and some nightmare jaws. “It is a design with which I am very happy,” says Edwards. “I would like to buy the doll when it comes out”. But beware, in addition to infusing terror, the purpose of D-Rex is also inviting reflection on genetic experimentation and inspiring pity: “Gareth wanted us to feel sorrow for him besides terror, because his deformities have caused him pain and that adds a burden,” adds David Vickery, supervisor of visual effects of Industrial Light & Magic.
And besides, the mutadons
The D-Rex will not be the only mutant dinosaur of ‘Jurassic World: The Renacer’. In addition to this imposing monster we will meet the Mutadans, “a fusion of pterosourium and velociraptor,” describes the screenwriter David Koepp, who returns to the saga after writing the first two deliveries led by Spielberg.
KOEPP is the architect of the Mutadans, as also confirmed to Empire: “They left my strange mind. We have seen in some of the previous films of ‘Jurassic World’ that the experiments made to the larger, more violent, more terrifying dinosaurs, and a Steven [Spielberg] It occurred to us that not all those experiments can do well“.
Starring Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali, ‘Jurassic World: The Renacer’ premieres exclusively in cinemas on July 2.
