The Criminal Court number 2 of Santiago has condemned José Luis SM, a neighbor of Ribeira, nine months in prison for a crime of continuous animal abuse that caused the death of his dog. The defendant recognized the facts before the court in a judgment of conformity.
According to the sentence, during 2019, The man kept the animal in extreme conditions: permanently chained, without access to food or water, and without receiving veterinary attention. These conditions resulted in a serious state of malnutrition and starvation that ended the life of the animal, which presented obvious signals of suffering, such as muscle atrophy, skin wounds, hair loss and dental fractures.
In addition to the prison sentence, a four -year disqualification is imposed for the possession of animals and to exercise activities related to them. It must also compensate with 100 euros to the entity Callejeros Barbanza, which collaborated in the case.
The protector El Refugio, who appeared as a popular accusation, held the sentence and expressed his satisfaction with the judicial result. Nacho Paunero, president of the organization, said They will continue to fight against abuse and animal abandonment “As long as this scourge exists.”
The prison sentence has been suspended for two years, provided that the convicted person pays the compensation imposed and does not commit crimes again in that period.
