The Champions League final between PSG and Inter Milan, which will take place in Munich on May 31, will be broadcast in clear. Good news for those who only have TNT. And the reason is simple: it is because of an institutional obligation which also applies during the Olympic Games or the football matches of the Blues. This year, for the first time in its history, the M6 group will be the broadcaster.
A political decision that suits more than one. The law imposes on channels the dissemination of certain sporting posters in the clear. Indeed, faced with the privatization of many disicipples, such as football, handball or even formula 1, political decisions have been clear: certain important sporting events must remain accessible to all.
This is the case with football matches of the Blues, the Olympic Games, the Top 14 final, that of Roland Garros, the XV matches of France and therefore of the Champions League final between PSG and Inter Milan. The latter is considered by the public authorities, whatever the clubs present, as a major sporting event.
For the first time, the M6 group was awarded the dissemination of the Champions League final. If Canal+ has broadcast the entire competition in France, the final must also be broadcast on a clear channel. Thus, Canal+ will be forced to concede its broadcast in M6 on May 31, since the group no longer has a free channel. “For the first time in its history, M6 will be the official broadcaster in the Clair of the Champions League final in 2025, 2026 and 2027, the most prestigious of European club competitions,” rejoiced the M6 group in a press release.
A decree established in 2004
M6 was in competition with other groups, notably TF1, which had already obtained this match between 2022 and 2024, but also in 2020 and before 2015. The final is one of the protected sporting events, called “major importance” which must be broadcast in clear, according to a decree established in 2004, like around twenty others like the Olympic Games.
In May 2022, the European Football Summit match, which saw Real Madrid’s victory over Liverpool (also marked by notable clashes), had been followed by nearly 7 million viewers on TF1.
