The Blood and Fabric Bank of the Balearic Islands (BSTIB) has made an urgent appeal to the population this morning because blood reserves are low. The agency warns that, if this situation is not reversed, interventions and treatments in hospitals will have to be postponed. Many of these treatments are related to the fight against cancer.
Today, the BSTIB only has 459 units of red blood cells available, when it normally needs more than 1,000 units to maintain hospital activity in normal operation. It also clarifies that even though all blood groups are urgently necessary, the most affected groups are or positive, or negative, positive and negative.
“The situation is critical,” they warn from the Blood Bank. “In recent days donations have dropped dramatically and have had to restrict the shipments of blood components to hospital centers, an exceptional measure that is never taken light. The risk of being left without sufficient blood components is real and close,” this body has stressed in a press release.
For these reasons, BSTIB calls all citizens between 18 and 65 years in good health to go to donate blood. Emphasize that it is not necessary to know which blood group we have, since they themselves analyze it after the donation.
