The UN special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, has condemned the attacks launched by Israel against Syrian territory in what he has denounced as an aggression to the country’s national sovereignty.
This past Friday, the Syrian authorities denounced the death of four civilians in “an Israeli attack” in the Sueida region, in the south of the country, after in recent hours the Israel authorities reported a bombing in the vicinity of the Damascus presidential palace before the climbing of sectarian violence.
This violence is, in part, the result of a confrontation between sueda features related to the new Syrian authorities and an armed entity, called Sueida Military Council, led by Tariq al Shufi, contrary to the new government, to which they remember their jihadist past, while critics of this new structure denounce that, in reality, they obey the designs of Israel.
In this crisis, the spiritual leader of the Drusa community, Hikmat al Hijri, who has also denounced the maneuvers of the Damascus forces, although the extension of its involvement is also very clear.
In this context, Pedersen “strongly” condemns the “constant and increasingly serious violations made by Israel against Syria’s sovereignty, including bombings against Damascus and other localities”, according to a statement published in its account of the social network X.
This tension was feedback with the crisis unleashed by the appearance a message considered insulting towards the prophet Muhammad, attributed to a Druso cleric, which resulted in a campaign of “sectarian incitement” that has extended to Sueda, a province where a significant number of members of this minority resides, with a provisional balance of more than a hundred dead.
