The price of banana in the Canary Islands It is surprising. In a 2025 that is already emerging as one of the most profitable years for producers, the market continues to register historical figures both in origin and destination. The fruit cultivated in the Canary Islands, especially that of extra quality, is being sold in supermarkets of the Peninsula above four euros per kilo, while the Canarian farmer is receiving up to 1.54 euros per kilo, a value that was not seen for years.
This commercial reality responds to a phenomenon that the island supply itself is causing: a production contained, below seven million per week, which has generated shortage in the market, and therefore a demand with upward prices for the banana of the Canary Islands.
Since volcanic eruption in La Palma in 2021, banana market behavior in the Canary Islands has been unpredictable. That year was positive, 2022 excellent, 2023 very bad, 2024 also negative and now 2025, at least in its first months, it resembles a bonanza cycle more. The comparison with 2022 is inevitable, although this year has even surpassed that in terms of average liquidation per kilo. This phenomenon is being accompanied by low external competition: the banana imported from Central America and Western Africa has reduced its presence, which has reinforced the position of the Canary Islands local product in the national market.
Today, producers of Canary Islands They are receiving a net price, after discounting the marketing costs, which ranges between 1.48 and 1.54 euros per kilo. This leaves positive margins even after discounting agricultural expenses, estimated between 0,60 y 0,70 euros per kilo. With this yield, farmers are achieving benefits that in previous years were unthinkable, especially if direct aid to banana is added, which amounts to 0.33 euros per kilo as long as the 420 million kilos of per year are not exceeded.
There are supermarkets from the Canary Islands with the price of more than 3 euros per kilo
The most recent official data, corresponding to week 17 (from April 21 to 27), reflect that the best valued fruit of the Canary Islands, in its extra category, has reached 1.54 euros per kilo, exceeding the records of the previous weeks. And everything indicates that a roof has not yet been reached. The situation clearly benefits the banana trees, but has generated anger between consumers both in the peninsula and in the Canary Islands, where more than three euros per kilo is paid for the local product, well above the usual price.
The evolution of the banana market in the Canary Islands also coincides with institutional changes. Asproan, the employer of the sector, will celebrate on Tuesday, May 6, its annual assembly with relief in the Presidency: Domingo Martín will yield the witness to José Carlos Rendón, representative of Europlátanoone of the six producers organizations that make up the hard core of the Plantenera marketing in the Canary Islands. This movement is produced in a context of growth in the sector, possible expansion of producing organizations and consolidation of a common strategy between entities such as Cupalma, Plains of Sardina and Canarian Plains.
Meanwhile, production forecasts for the rest of the year maintain prudence. If the weekly offer continues below seven million kilos, the market will continue to reward the quality and closeness of the Canary Islands banana, with prices that, for the moment, have no intention of descending.
Everything indicates that this 2025 could close as a record year for the agricultural sector of the Canary Islands, reinforcing the strategic importance of a product that, beyond its economic value, symbolizes the roots and identity of the archipelago. With each kilo of fruit sold, the Canary Islands export not only flavor, but also resistance, tradition and an economy that, when the conditions allow it, is imposed on markets with force.
