The Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelenski, said Thursday after a phone call with his American couple, Donald Trump, that his country is willing to establish a negotiation with Moscow under “any format” to end the conflict triggered by the Russian invasion.
Zelenski and Trump spoke on the afternoon, after the Ukrainian Parliament ratified the agreement with Washington on the natural resources of the country at war.
The Ukrainian leader confirmed on social networks that “Ukraine is willing to negotiate under any format.” But “for this to happen, it is necessary that Russia show that it really wants to end the war, starting with a complete and unconditional fire,” he added.
After the conversation, Trump asked for an unconditional truce of one month between Russia and Ukraine and warned that he will impose sanctions if he is not respected.
“The conversations with Russia and Ukraine continue. The United States asks, ideally, a high unconditional fire of 30 days,” he wrote on his social Truth network.
“Everything can be done very quickly, and I will be available at any time if my services are needed,” said the Republican tycoon, who seeks a high fire that leads to a “lasting peace” to end the war unleashed after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The conversation between Trump and Zelenski occurred after the Ukrainian Parliament ratified the agreement with the United States on the exploitation of the natural resources of the former Soviet Republic.
The pact was signed after weeks of tense negotiations and according to kyiv, it could open the way to a new US military aid.
Zelenski considered that the text opens a “new chapter” in relationships.
The treaty refers to the extraction of minerals, oil and gas in Ukraine but does not include security guarantees, as kyiv asked.
The bilateral agreement was signed at the end of April after weeks of tensions between kyiv and Washington, which culminated in a verbal confrontation between both presidents in the Oval Office in February.
Contrary to what Trump wanted, the document does not contemplate counting as a debt of Ukraine to the United States the US help granted for its predecessor Joe Biden since the beginning of the invasion.
It does not include security guarantees, but offers “an opportunity to press Russia, because it shows that the United States is willing to protect its association and interests. It is not just my impression, they are words of the White House,” said Kiev’s Minister of Economy, Yulia Svydenko.
The text expects, however, that the new US military aid can be counted as a contribution to a Ukrainian-American investment fund, he recalled.
