The leaders of Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Poland arrived in Kyiv to meet with the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, symbol of the European Unity, to publicly press the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin.
Friedrich Merz, the new Chancellor of Germany; the president of France, Emmanuel Macron; the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer; And his Polish counterpart, Donald Tusk, arrived together this Saturday morning at the main Kyiv train station, where they were received by Zelenskiy Cabinet Chief Andriy Yermak.
The meetings are a sample of the renewed diplomatic urgency to achieve a high fire in the war between Russia and Ukraine, which extends despite the efforts of the United States to negotiate peace.
“There is a lot of work to do and many issues to discuss. This war must end with a fair peace. Moscow must be forced to accept a fire,” Yermak wrote on his Telegram channel.
The first stop of the European leaders was the Kyiv Independence Square, where they met to pay tribute to the fallen Ukrainian soldiers.
Ukraine, with the support of Europeans, has been asking for a high immediate and unconditional fire of 30 days, something that the president of the United States, Donald Trump, also demands.
Russia has so far refused to commit, stating that it supports the idea of a high fire in principle, but insists that there are what it calls “nuances” that must be addressed first.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, in an interview with ABC News this Saturday, suggested that one of these “nuances” was to stop the supply of US and European weapons to Ukraine.
Putin has often spoken about the need to address what he calls “fundamental causes,” that they are interpreted, among others, such as NATO’s expansion to the east.
In a publication in Truth Social on Thursday, Trump wrote that “if the high fire, the United States and its partners will impose more sanctions”, which increases the sensation of growing frustration with Russian evasive.
Trump’s investiture in January marked the beginning of a radical change in the United States diplomatic approach to war, since Ukraine and its key allies fear a significant inclination of US politics towards Moscow.
In response, European leaders have summoned a series of meetings, with the aim of demonstrating to the United States that Europe can do more to militarily support Ukraine and offer a unified voice to urge US President not to stand on Russia in the war.
“A fair and lasting peace begins with a high total and unconditional fire. That is the proposal we are promoting with the United States,” wrote the president of France, Macron, in his X account this Saturday.
“Ukraine accepted [la propuesta de alto el fuego] March 11. Russia, however, takes, imposes previous conditions, tries to save time and continue its invasion war. If Moscow continues to obstruct, we will intensify the pressure, together, as Europeans and in close coordination with the United States. We welcomed the call of President Trump to advance in this direction, ”Macron added.
