The American president said that “too many people are dying” in the conflict and criticized the recent Russian attacks against civil areas in Ukraine.
The president of the United States, Donald Trump, warned this Saturday that he could impose new sanctions on his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.
“Putin had no reason to launch missiles against civil areas, cities and towns in recent days. It makes me think that he may not want to stop the war. And it must be treated otherwise, perhaps through financial sanctions or secondary sanctions,” Trump said in his social network account, Truth Social.
The American president said that “too many people are dying” in the conflict and criticized the recent Russian attacks against civil areas in Ukraine.
In addition, he lashed out against The New York Times and journalist Peter Baker, whom he accused of “partiality” by suggesting that Ukraine should recover territories such as Crimea to achieve peace. Trump said it was during the Barack Obama government when Russia was annexed by Crimea “without shooting a single shot”, and denounced that his predecessor has never been criticized enough for that fact.
Trump insisted that “he has no responsibility” in the conflict, except for having sent defensive armament to Ukraine during his term, and attributed the origin of the war to former President Obama and the current president, Joe Biden, describing it as “a cause lost from the first day” that, he said, “it would never have happened” if he had been in the White House.
These statements occurred shortly after Trump attended the funeral of Pope Francis in the Vatican, accompanied by his wife, Melania Trump.
During his stay in Rome, the US president also held an encounter with the president of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, to discuss the situation in the war front.
