Havana/The body of rangers of Cuba still tried to control the forest fire of large proportions that for a week has burned some 2,900 hectares in areas of the Pinar del Río province, Cuban television reported this Saturday.
Fire affects areas of the Pinarños municipalities of San Juan and Martínez and Mines de Mathahambre and has not been able to control due to the intense drought, the presence of combustible material and the strong winds, according to reports of the state Cuban news agency.
The incident, qualified as one of the largest registered in that Cuban region, does not offer danger to nearby communities, according to authorities of the territory, so they have not evacuated the population, adds the report.
In addition to the use of mechanized media, in combat of the flames aviation is used to cool the fronts of the fire and continue to carry out specialized lines with the aim of reducing fuel material and preventing it from being extended, explained the head of the body of rangers in the region, Alexander Pereda.

Pinar del Río, with more than 411,000 ha of forests and 48% of its surface covered with trees, is the second most reforested province of Cuba, and so far this year reports more than 60 forest fires, 95% of them caused by human negligence, according to specialists in the body of that territory.
Between January 1 and February 24, 2025, forest fires affected 161.55 ha of forests, detailed a report by Institution. The most critical period for forest fires covers from January to May, which coincides with the dry season, according to the Institution of Razesques.
In 2024, at the end of the Forest Fire Protection Campaign, which takes place in the first five months of the year, the Guardabo body reported 326 conflagrations that affected almost 3,000 ha of forests.
