An electric supply cut affected the entire Iberian Peninsula around 11:33 am local time (6:33 am et) on Monday, as confirmed by the National Electricity of Portugal (REN). The company also said that some parts of France were affected by the cut.
“All plans are being activated to restore electricity supply by stages, in coordination with European energy producers and operators,” the network said, adding that the possible causes of this incident are being evaluated.
For its part, the Spanish Electric Electric Red Operating Company said it was working with energy companies to restore the supply. “The causes are being analyzed and all the resources to be solved are being allocated,” he added. “We will continue informing them.”
The Portugal Police warned that traffic lights and public lighting ran the risk of failure. “It reduces speed and pays special attention,” they warned, and urged the population to avoid unnecessary displacements. “Prioritize safe driving: its tranquility saves lives,” added the statement.
In Madrid, traffic was congested after the blackout. “I was driving and there were no traffic lights (…) was a kind of jungle,” said Luis Ibáñez Jiménez to CNN. “I saw a huge bus coming and I had to accelerate a lot to advance it.”
A tourist at the Humberto Delgado Airport in Lisbon said that hundreds of people queue in the dark, without air conditioning or running water. The stores only accepted effective, according to CNN.
The Spanish railway operator Renfe said there was an energy cut nationwide, which caused the trains to stop and cancel outings. E-Redes, an electricity supplier in Portugal, said in a statement that I was working to restore the connection. “This is a problem that affects all of Europe,” said the company in a statement, according to Reuters.
