They highlight in Puerto Rico Vietnamese courage lesson

“The Vietnamese people had to face the most powerful , and power on the planet, and defeated, offering the entire a great lesson of perseverance, patriotism and courage,” said the president of the Minh, Julio Muriente Pérez.

In letter of Ambassador Hoang Giang Dang, permanent representative of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam before the United Nations Organization, the Puerto Rican independence leader said that “with deep emotion we remember the 50th anniversary of the triumph of the brother of Vietnam’s people.”

“American imperialist aggression against Vietnam touched very closely to the Puerto Rican people, especially our ,” said Minh president.

He said that as a consequence of the status of American colony faced by Puerto Rico since 1898, their laws, particularly that of the compulsory military unilaterally.

“Young Puerto Ricans were forced to enter the United States armed forces to go against the Vietnamese people, which is our friend and ally in the struggle for . Many died or were injured from the body and spirit,” he summarized.

He recalled that in Puerto Rico an enveloping campaign against the participation of young Puerto Ricans in that of aggression and – participating – in active and militant support to the Vietnamese was generated.

“Hundreds of Puerto Ricans refused to enter the United States Armed Forces; the fight against militarism and in support of the people of Vietnam was especially intense in Puerto Rican universities.

Muriente Pérez noted that a Puerto Rican youth leader, José Rafel Fefel Varona, was killed by the bombs launched by US warplanes while visiting southern Vietnam, representing the Latin American continental organization of (Oclae).

“Fefel became the symbol of Latin American and Caribbean youth in support for the heroic town of Vietnam”, so 50 years after that memorable , Vietnam remains a great example for humanity.

Muriente Pérez noted that the new generations evoke that extraordinary struggle for freedom, remembers the president Ho Chi Minh (1890-1969) and are educated in the , huge example of the people of Vietnam as a flag bearer of independence.

“From Puerto Rico in struggle for its independence and liberation, following the route drawn by the brother people of Vietnam, our solidarity hug and the repeated samples of our appreciation, respect and admiration on this glorious anniversary of victory, reunification and peace,” said the Puerto Rican leftist leader.
