Miami. The United States executed a war veteran sentenced for murdering her partner and the three young children of her in 1998 in the southern state of Florida.
Jeffrey Hutchinson, 62, received a lethal injection in a prison in the Bradford County (North) at 20h14 (00h14 GMT on Friday), state authorities reported.
Until the last moment, his defense tried to avoid the death of the veteran claiming that he suffered mental disorders from his participation in the Gulf War (1990-1991). The Supreme Court dismissed a last resort against execution just before it was carried out.
According to judicial documents, on September 11, 1998, Hutchinson discussed with his partner, Renee Flaherty, 32; He picked up his belongings and left the house they shared in his truck.
He then led to a nearby bar, where he took a beer and a half, before returning to the home armed with a shotgun. In a bedroom he shot Flaherty with his daughter Amanda, seven, and little Logan, four.
Then he ended the life of Geoffrey Flaherty, nine, who had come to the bedroom door after hearing the first shots.
After the murders, Hutchinson called the police and said: “I just shoot my family.” The agents who went to the scene found the veteran with blood on the clothes and gunpowder residues in the hands.
The defendant said during his trial that the deaths had been the work of two masked. Hutchinson was the fifteenth person to suffer capital punishment in the United States in 2025 and the fourth in Florida. On May 15, the southern state plans to execute another death sentenced, Glen Rogers, 62, accused of killing a woman in 1995 in Tampa.
The death penalty has been abolished in 23 of the 50 states of the country, and three others, California, Oregon and Pennsylvania, have moratoriums on their application.
