“You just need your eyes and, if possible, a dark sky,” he said.
This is because meteors can be shot through large stripes from heaven, so the observation team can limit your field of vision.
According to American meteor society, some rains are intense enough to produce up to 100 steles per hour, although you are likely not to see so many.
“Almost everyone is under a sky contaminated by light,” said Nichols. “You can think that you are under a dark sky, but in reality, even in a small city, you can have bright lights nearby.”
Planetarians, local astronomy clubs or even maps like this can help you know where to get away from excessive light. The best conditions to see a meteor rain are a clear sky, moonless or clouds, between midnight and dawn. (The moonlight affects visibility in the same way as light pollution, since it erases the weakest light sources from heaven). Make sure your eyes have at least 30 minutes to adapt to see in the dark.
Nichols also recommends carrying several layers of clothing, even in summer. “You’ll be sitting there for a while, watching,” he said. “It will be cold, even in August.”
