Hollywood reacted with skepticism on Monday (05.05.2025) to the announcement of President Donald Trump to impose 100% tariffs on the films produced outside the United States, an idea that industry experts consider counterproductive.
“It makes no sense,” said the lawyer of the Jonathan Handel to the AFP agency.
“If an acrobatics implies that Tom Cruise raises the Eiffel Tower, what are we supposed to do? Does filming it in the replica of the Eiffel Tower in Las Vegas? It makes no sense,” said Handel who recalled that blockbusters as “impossible mission” are roll abroad for artistic reasons.
In a message on the Social Truth Network, Trump asked the Department of Commerce “to immediately start the process of instituting a 100% tariff to any film that reaches our country and is produced abroad.”
Trump: solo “movies made in USA”
“We want movies made in the United States, again!”
The answer was swift. “We are in it,” said Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick.
Although the White House did not explain how this type of tax imposition will execute to the productions, many of which are filmed digitally and transferred online or in memory units, the exchange dropped the actions of studies such as Netflix, Disney and Paramount.
“This is intellectual property,” said Handel. “You can buy an entrance to the cinema but you cannot buy a movie just as you buy a garment or a car,” he said.
Experts warned that imposing a 100% tariff on filming in other countries would considerably raise production costs. The White House reported that it has not yet made a definitive decision in this regard.
