Lima (EFE) .- The Congress of Peru rejected on Wednesday to give permission to the president Dina Boluarte to attend the funeral of Pope Francis in the Vatican, in a plenary session called at the request of the president.
The president of the Congress, Eduardo Sallehuana, summoned an extraordinary plenary to exclusively put the application of Boluarte to travel, since the heads of state of Peru need the approval of the Parliament to be able to leave the country.
Legislators rejected authorization for 45 votes against, 40 votes in favor and one abstention.
During the brief debate, the Congressman of the ultraconservator popular renewal, Diego Bazán, said he was “ashamed” of this type of application because the chancellor, Elmer Schialer, could represent the Peruvian state “dignity” in that event.
Criticism of the President
“We are obliged to be here before a whim of the president, who does not realize the crisis of insecurity in the country and the penitentiary crisis,” added the parliamentarian.
For her part, the leftist legislator her walls, of the progressive democratic block, said that “it is not possible that (Boluarte) wants to go” when in Peru there are “six dead daily (because of citizen insecurity), there is no business that does not suffer from extortion and there are hundreds of schools closed by extortion.”
-The parliamentarian advised the president to be “austere”, like Pope Francis, to go “every day to Mass” and “do not spend in superficialities.”
“You have to follow the example of the Pope’s authority and stay here working,” said Paredes.
The president had asked Congress to travel from April 24 to 28 to El Vaticano to attend the funeral of Pope Francis, with the argument that his presence in the funeral “constitutes a gesture of respect, gratitude and closeness of the Peruvian people with the Holy See and with the pastoral and humanitarian legacy of Pope Francis.”
World leaders will attend funeral
After knowing that request, Congress convened a semi -creencial plenary session this Wednesday, since legislators comply this week in their respective regions.
Boluarte decreed last Monday the national duel for three days due to the death of Pope Francis and announced that a high -level mission would participate in the pontiff’s funeral, who died at 88 in his residence of the Vatican.
Among the numerous international leaders who have already confirmed their assistance to the funeral are the US president, Donald Trump, as well as the kings of Spain, the president of France, Emmanuel Macron, and that of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski.
