More than 7,000 micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Peru have been benefited by the program AL-INVEST Verdean initiative of the European Union aimed at promoting sustainable growth and employment generation in Latin America. As reported by the program, this strategy focuses on the transition to a more circular and low carbon economy, with an approach to key sectors such as agricultural, agroindustrial and material management such as plastic.
According to the data provided by the program, more than three million euros have been allocated for the execution of eight projects in Peru. These initiatives seek to strengthen the productivity and sustainability of MSMEs through the implementation of innovative and sustainable practices. Among the most benefited sectors are coffee, cocoa and aguaje crops, as well as areas of clothing, sustainable fashion and Commerce.
The program AL-INVEST Verdewhich is currently in its intermediate phase, has made significant progress in the Latin American region. As detailed by the program team, one of the fundamental pillars has been the promotion of more sustainable agricultural systems. For example, in the agricultural sector, producers have adopted the polyculture, a technique that allows to optimize productivity and manage resources more efficiently.
In the industrial field, MSMEs have begun to reuse waste for the creation of new products from recycled materials. This approach not only reduces the environmental impact, but also encourages innovation and competitiveness in international markets. Irene Haddad, leader of component 1 support to the Program Private Sector, stressed that these advances reflect a tangible change towards more circular business models.

The impact of the program in Peru has been angular. More than 7,000 MSMEs have received training to improve their productivity, efficiency and ability to adapt to global markets. Of these, about 2,000 companies have implemented sustainable practices, which has allowed the creation and maintenance of 1,400 green jobs.
