The Government of Peru expressed on Wednesday its most energetic condemnation of the terrorist attack perpetrated in the town of Pahalgam, in the Jammu and Cashmira region, India, which left a balance of 26 people killed. Through an official statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also expressed its deep regret and extended its condolences to the families of the victims, reiterating their rejection of terrorism in all its forms.
The Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi, described the fact as “a terrorist attack” and assured that justice will be done with those responsible. The attack has shocked the international community and occurs in a context of persistent tensions in this region of northern India, where violent episodes have already occurred in the past.
So far, the authorship of the attack has not been officially confirmed, although some local media point to a group linked to Lashkar-E-Taiba, an extremist organization based on Pakistan, as possible responsible. The investigations continue under the direction of the Indian authorities.
The attack occurred in the immediate vicinity of Pahalgam, a tourist destination in the Himalayas known for its mountainous landscapes and pine forests. Nicknamed “The little Switzerland of India”, the area attracts visitors from all over the world. This act of violence has generated alarm both locally and internationally, and puts the need for narrower global cooperation again to combat terrorism.
