The Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP) asked Peruvians to remain calm after the 7.5 earthquake occurred on the morning of Friday, May 2 to southern Chile and ruled out that this natural event generates some impact on Peru.
Through a statement, the PPE recalled that at 07:58 hours (Peruvian time) a Earthquake with epicenter 218 km south of Puerto Williams (Chile), with magnitude of M7.5 and a depth of 10 km, according to the National Seismological Center of the University of Chile.
For this reason, the population is invoked to remain calm, because, in their capacity as institution responsible for the surveillance of seismic activity in Peru, the PGI has been monitoring, 24 hours a day, any seismic event through the National Seismological Center (censis).
After the strong earthquake, the authorities of Chile and Argentina declared the coastal edge on alert due to a possible tsunami. Chilean President Gabriel Buric ordered the evacuation of the coastal edge throughout the Magallanes zone: to the south of Chile.
For their part, the authorities of the Argentine province of Tierra del Fuego (south) called this Friday to evacuate “preventively” the small town of Puerto Almanza for a Tsunami alert due to an earthquake of magnitude 7.5 in the sea.
