After the murder of 13 mining workers of R&R company of Minera Powerful in the province of Pataz, La Libertad Region, on May 4, the Minister of Agrarian Development and Irrigation, Ángel Manero, said that despite the efforts to provide security in that area, the expected goals have not been met.
“The results have not accompanied us. Therefore, you have to do different things now,” said Manero, stressing that the authorities have not done the best work in Pataz.
Premier provided inaccurate information about Matanzas in Pataz
At another time, Manero said that Premier Gustavo Andrianzén provided inaccurate information about the kidnapping of the miners, but that he has already been corrected. “He gave information that was not required at the time. The important thing is now that concrete and more drastic decisions are being made.
He also said that the Armed Forces have taken control in Pataz. “A thousand elite police officers are being deployed and a military base will be built in the area,” he said, stressing that the situation would be control in that province.
They will request legislative powers after suspension of mining activities
The head of Midagri, Ángel Manero, said that after the suspension of mining activity for thirty days in Pataz, the Government will request legislative powers not only to face crime, but also to guarantee legal certainty and economic reactivation.
“This is a problem that also has to do with property right and with the lack of alternative engines in the local economy. Many people come to informal mining because there are no other productive opportunities,” said Manero.
