The use of mobile devices between adolescents: a pending debate in science

The impact of the use of mobile devices on adolescents is an issue that continues to generate an intense debate between academics and health experts. Despite the numerous studies, there is no definitive consensus on whether the effects of these technologies are predominantly beneficial or harmful. In this context, two researchers have proposed a controversial comparison: consider the use of screens as an addictive substance, similar to alcohol, with the aim of establishing clear parameters that help identify problematic patterns in young people.

Dimitri A. Christakis, a professor at the University of Washington, argues that although the use of screens is essential and can enrich our lives, it is essential to address it in moderation. It proposes a measurement of the of use of devices, following criteria adapted to alcohol consumption, which classify the use of screens in various categories, from moderate consumption to excessive use. According to the authors of this proposal, such a approach could help and educators identify the use of devices becomes a problem.

However, this analogy has been received with skepticism by other researchers. Experts such as Maialen Garmendia and David Smahel have pointed out that the comparison between alcohol consumption and screens use time is simplistic and does not capture the complexity of the phenomenon. They argue that, unlike alcohol, the time a teenager spends online can have significant nuances depending on how it is used. The main concern is that focusing solely on the time of use could lead to misunderstandings on the nature of the problem, since the context and the content consumed are equally relevant to evaluate the impact on the health and well -being of young people.
