WhatsApp confirms cut: iPhones that will cease to be compatible since May 5

The countdown has begun. As of May 5, 2025, WhatsApp will stop working on several iPhone models, which will affect thousands of users worldwide. This measure, officially confirmed by WhatsApp after being advanced by the Wabetainfo portal, marks a significant in the compatibility requirements of the popular messaging application.

Until now, WhatsApp is compatible with devices that have iOS 12 or later. However, since May 5, the application will only on iPhones with iOS 15.1 or higher. This means that three iconic Apple models will be left out:

  • iPhone 5s
  • iPhone 6
  • iPhone 6 Plus

These devices only support IOS 12.5.7, which will leave them out of the new App. If you use one of these models, you will have to consider changing phone, use another application or leave whatsapp.

On the other hand, the iPhone 6s and later models will not have problems. The iPhone 6s, for example, is compatible with iOS 15.8.4, which meets the new minimum application of the application. WhatsApp has already updated this information on its support page.

As for Android users, there are no changes at the moment. WhatsApp will continue to require Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or higher. Any device with a previous version will still not be able to use the app, but no new restrictions have been announced for this platform.

In short, if you have an iPhone 5S, 6 or 6 plus, you have only a few days left to decide what to do. If you do not update your device, you will access to WhatsApp from May 5.
