One of the best 2025 meteor rains will take place next week, how to see it?

The meteorit rains occur when the earth moves through the rubble left by comets in their path, causing some of the rock and dust fragments of these objects to rush into the atmosphere. In the case of the ETA Acuáridas, it originates from the remains of ice and rock expelled by the code 1p/Halley every time it returns from the inner solar system.

Where can you see this event?

The astronomical phenomenon, which will be active until May 21, will be observable from both terrestrial hemispheres. However, most of the activity will be observed in the southern hemisphere, where an average rate of almost 60 meteorites per hour will be seen, compared to the 10 meteorites per hour that will be glimpsed from the northern hemisphere.

This is because the location of the radiant of the ETA Acuáridas, which is the area where their meteors seem to come, is higher in the southern hemisphere. On the other hand, the meteorites of this rain stand out for their speed, since they move about 65 kilometers per hour towards the atmosphere, leaving bright traces in its path that lasts a few minutes.

How to see this phenomenon?

NASA points out that the best way to visualize the ETA Acuáridas is from a dark place and away from the cities, and that observers must posed their gaze to the east of heaven. The best chances of seeing these objects is when the sky is clear.

This year, the increasing room phase moon will get shortly after 3:00 of the local time of the observer’s place, which will leave only one hour of reasonably dark sky for the observations of this event before dawn. According to the predictions of the American Society of Meteors, the Moon will be illuminated at 64 % in the early hours of Tuesday.
