The piece exposes a strong contrast between two realities: while in some countries girls dress in white to celebrate their first communion, they do it by being forced to marry.
If for some to see a girl dressed in white, it symbolizes tenderness and makes us think that they will probably do the first communion, against them or to be exact those that live in other parts of the world, using such a suit can be the announcement of a series of abuses.
And it is – although it seems unheard of – there are many countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and even Latin America, where this serious attack against the human rights of the smallest is presented: child marriage.
Every year, more than 12 million girls and adolescents in the world are forced to get married. In context and to echo this problem, UNICEF Spain has just launched ‘My first wedding’, an awareness campaign against this abuse.
Developed by Proximity Madrid, the proposal consists of a visual piece that simulates being a journal cover starring a girl dressed in white. The shocking thing about the image is that it has a headline that says “my first wedding”, accompanied by the message “While Maria makes communion here, in India, Priya is getting married.
This simple and shocking proposal seeks to cause an emotional reaction to arouse empathy, reflection and the sense of justice from a family and recognizable context.
