Jack Draper will enter Monday at the Top 5 of the PIF ATP Rankings for the first time in his career after his last victory at the Mutua Madrid Open.
The 23-year-old dispatched Matteo Arnaldi 6-0, 6-4 on Thursday to reach his first semifinal in whipped land and will now become the fourth British player to reach the top 5 in the history of the PIF ATP Ranking (1973), joining the ex No. 1 of the world Andy Murray and the No. 4 of the world Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski.
British to be Top 5 of the PIF ATP Rankings
Draper arrived in Madrid at No. 6, after entering for the first time in the Top 10 after winning his first ATP Masters 1000 title in Indian Wells in March. Draper has been close to his best level throughout his career in Spain, where he has eliminated Tallon Griekspoor, Matteo Berrettini, Tommy Paul and Arnaldi. The season began at No. 15 and last year in Madrid was No. 43.
After becoming the second left -hander of this century, next to Rafael Nadal, to enter the Top 5, Draper would be located only 25 points of No. 4 of the PIF ATP Live Rankings Taylor Fritz if he wins his fourth trophy in Madrid.
Draper, who did not face any breakdown according to Infosys ATP Stats in his 77-minute victory against Arnaldi, is now 18-4 in the season and goes up to third place in the PIF ATP Live Race to Turin, surpassing Jannik Sinner, who will be in action next week in Rome.
Draper will continue his search for the title of Madrid in the semifinals against Lorenzo Musetti, after the Italian defeats Gabriel Diallo 6-4 and 6-3, reaching his second semifinal ATP Masters 1000 consecutive. Musetti has won nine of his last 10 games, falling only against Carlos Alcaraz in the Montecarlo final.
After his victory over Diallo, Musetti surpassed Holger Rune in position No. 8 of the PIF ATP Live Rankings. Draper puts Musetti 3-0 in his series Lexus ATP Head2hed, with the three clashes on a hard roof track.
