The European Union offered Israel to distribute humanitarian aid in Gaza after two months of blocking by Israeli authorities, “if you do not trust” other organizations on the ground, said Wednesday (07.05.2025) the high EU representative for foreign affairs and security, Kaja Kallas.
“It is a big problem that humanitarian aid does not reach the population. I spoke yesterday with the Minister (Foreign Israeli, Gideon) Saar, I also offered the help of the European Union to distribute humanitarian aid if they do not trust the other actors there,” Kallas said before the press upon his arrival at an informal meeting of Community Exterior headlines.
“We are trying to do what is in our hands to help,” he added.
Hours before, Kallas published a joint statement with the European commissioners for preparation and management of crisis and equality, Hadja Lahbib, and the Mediterranean, Dubravka Suika, in which they reiterated their “urgent call to Israel to immediately lift the gaza blockade”, the strongest to which the strip has ever faced, they remembered.
-In the statement, they also expressed EU’s concern for the new “mechanism for the delivery of help to Gaza, approved apparently by the Israeli security cabinet on May 4, which goes against the humanitarian principles, as underlined by the UN agencies and humanitarian partners.”
That mechanism, they said, would transfer the responsibility for the distribution of aid to non -humanitarian international agents and security contractors.
Kallas insisted that the EU defends a solution of two states and that on the “unsustainable” loss of human lives in Gaza the EU “has been heard” against Israel.
