The Regional Latinamerican from forget (REL UITA) expressed his by the murder of Walberto Quintero measurevice president of the Unitary Central of Workers (CUT) in the department of Cesar, Colombia, and leader of the Sinaltrainal Union. The International organization demanded the clarification of the crime and the punishment of those responsible.
The homicide occurred last Monday, April 28, when a hitman shot six times from behind Quintero while sharing with friends in a store in the Sicarare neighborhood in Valledupar. Despite being immediately transferred to a hospital, the trade unionist died on the morning of the next day.
With only 40 years, Quintero had a trajectory of more than two decades in Dairy Partners Americas (DPA), where he served in the technical area. It was also an active political militant and defender of labor rights. The union organization denounced that “this systematic barbarism committed against social actors committed to human rights, the environment and the union field is facilitated by the reigning impunity.”
According to Amnesty International data, more than 200 social leaders were killed in Colombia during 2024. The Colombian trade union movement accumulates, between 1971 and 2020, more than 15,000 acts of violence. “We demand that the competent authorities be clarified and those responsible material and intellectuals are identified and taken before justice”, Demanded the regional.
The international organization also expressed its solidarity with Sinaltrainal and with the family of Quintero measure, and reiterated its commitment to the defense of life and freedom of association in Colombia.
