The flag, which remained in the Herrera Museum “Fabio Rodríguez”, was taken first to a reserve where it will be stabilized before its departure, on May 26, from the Tocumen airport to Madrid. The restoration will have an estimated duration of 18 months, according to the Ministry of Culture in a press release.
The banner, with the inverted colors of the national pavilion, was raised in Chitré, Monagrillo and La Arena during the separation acts in 1903, it was made by Chitrean women. Its name comes from a bullet mark on its surface.
The process is carried out under an agreement between the Kingdom of Spain and the Republic of Panama, with the support of companies that have collaborated in the transfer, insurance and logistics.
The Minister of Culture, María Eugenia Herrera, said that “preserving our history is to protect the soul of the nation” and highlighted the will of the country to preserve the elements that are part of her identity.
The project has the support of the National Commission of Homeland Symbols (Conasina), the Ministry of Government, the National Library and other institutions. The initial journey from Herrera to the capital was carried out with custody and with acts of recognition along the way.

The transfer will be executed under international conservation standards, with specialized packaging, certified vehicles for the transport of cultural goods and the participation of qualified technical personnel.
The project is supported by the National Commission of Patrios Symbols (Conasina), the Ministry of Government, the National Library and other cultural and academic entities of the country.
Custody is in charge of state security levels: National Police, National Aeronaval Service (Senan), National Border Service (Senafront), the Benemérito Fire Department and the Terrestrial Transit and Transportation Authority.
During the first journey between Herrera to the capital, each station on the route paid tribute to this national symbol, as an act of respect and living memory. The route, of approximately four hours, was carried out without interruptions, at a controlled speed of 80 km/h due to the delicate state of conservation of the piece.
