SACRAMENTO. – Today, Sunday, May 4, the Forest fire preparation week 2025 In California. This annual event, which will run until May 10, represents an urgent call to all Californians to prepare and reduce the risk of forest fires in their homes and communities.
With this year’s motto, “Building a future prepared for fires: strengthening our defenses, together”Cal Fire and its allies seek to strengthen collaboration between citizens, community organizations and state authorities. The goal: face the constant threat of fires that, in California, is no longer limited to a single season.
“Building a future prepared against fire means working together. When each person strengthens their home, creates defensible space and has an emergency plan, it is helping to protect lives and natural resources,” said Joe Tyler, director of Cal Fire and head of the State Fire Department.
During this week, Cal Fire will intensify preventive actions such as strategic fuel reduction, forest health programs and subsidies for private owners, community security councils and communities recognized as Firewise.
The call includes concrete steps that residents can take immediately:
- Create defensible space, especially in the first five feet around the house (zone 0).
- Strengthen home structures with fire -resistant materials.
- Prepare and test an action plan in case of fire.
- Register to receive local emergency alerts.
- Prepare an evacuation backpack or “go bag” With essential supplies.
“The first step towards fire safety is to be prepared,” said Daniel Berlant, state chief firefighters. “Protecting our houses and communities requires the active participation of all: neighbors, local groups and state agencies working side by side.”
Cal Fire invites citizens to inform themselves and share resources available in their Fire Preparation Resource Center Online, as well as on the platform www.readyforwildfire.org, where the free app can also be downloaded FirePLANNERdesigned to create personalized evacuation plans and receive local alerts.
This week, beyond a campaign, it is an invitation to assume a commitment: to prepare ourselves today to protect what we value most tomorrow.
