A song to Christian values and the preservation task carried out by the Gijonese brotherhoods to maintain the traditions that support this way of understanding life. Fernando González Landa, engineer of roads, channels and ports, former president of the Royal Club of Regatas and current president of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation of the Jove Hospital, was in charge of giving the literary proclamation that began the Holy Week of Gijón in the church of San Pedro before a crowded temple willing to listen to him.
Landa acknowledged that at first rejected this honor. He made him convinced that he was not «the best person endowed. He recalled his childhood “within a family with deep religious beliefs.” And, especially to his father, one of the people “with more faith” he met.
Under the paternal advice that “we are here only to pass the witness”, understanding as the transmission of fundamental values, Landa explained that these are those who have Christianity, and therefore, something that Gijonese brotherhoods possess. “How to refuse to collaborate with people who are working with generosity and enthusiasm to recover, maintain and improve traditions so rooted in our way of understanding life,” he justified his ending acceptance to be this year’s preacher.
«tourist attraction»
Landa, which was defined as “more gijon than the staircase,” said that this cause, together with its Christian belief, were sufficient to “support that effort” that beyond being a religious event has “a cultural dimension and a tourist attraction” of a multitude of people who enjoy “respectfully” of the beauty of the processions.
Returning to his Gijon feeling, Landa confessed to being a “partner of Sporting for almost 70 years.” Now, being older «I can’t see my team or television. I suffer too much, I end up angry and sad ». That is why he sees all the games when he wins, “already known the result and knowing that a good ending awaits me.”
The polyphonic closed
He joined the knowledge of that sweet victory with Holy Week, which always ends up happy with “the resurrection of our Lord.” He encouraged the parishioners to live Holy Week “with religiosity, proud of our beliefs and traditions” and, remembering his father again, he encouraged “passing the testid of our Christian way of understanding life.”
The massive applause of those present lasted several minutes. Among the attendees, among which were the older brothers, Ignacio Alvargonzález (mercy); Alejandro Vallaure (Santo Sepulcro) and Juan Antonio Rodríguez -Pládano (Santa Vera Cruz), also congregated a large part of the Municipal Corporation, being able to see the mayor, Carmen Moriyón, the ViceAlcaldesa, Ángela Pumariega, and the councilors of attention to citizenship and districts, Abel Junquera; of social services, Guzmán Pendás; of sports and education, Jorge Pañeda, and institutional relations, Jorge González-Palacios. As well as the Vox Councilor, Sara Álvarez Rouco and the regional deputy and president of the PP of Gijón, Andrés Ruiz.
After reading the proclamation, the Gijonese polyphonic coral Anselmo Solar directed by Santi Novoa that offered a small concert formed by seven musical pieces.
