The president demanded that the administration of Donald Trump “put law” and free Maikelys, arguing that the US government has the obligation to respect the girl’s right to be with her mother. “It is the cry of a town, the shout of an entire country,” said Maduro, who also referred to the historical context of child kidnapping, remembering similar campaigns in Cuba during the revolution.
Indignation in Venezuela has reached high levels. Signatures and mobilizations collection days have been organized in solidarity with the relatives of 253 Venezuelans kidnapped in El Salvador. Maduro compared the Salvadoran president Nayib Bukele with the infamous Nazi doctor Joseph Mengele, stating that his government is responsible for atrocities against Venezuelan migrants.
The president stressed that love for Maikelys has transformed national outrage into a collective clamor for justice. During the mobilizations of May 1, more than one million Venezuelans joined in one voice: “Respect for Venezuela, freedom for the girl Maikelys.”
Maduro concluded by ensuring that, with faith and unity, justice will be restored. “You will see,” he promised before a people determined to fight for his rights and for the safe return of Maikelys to his home.
